Which Linear Models This Applies To

Linear swing gate operators, the APeX and older LRA series especially, share a common failure point: the steel bracket that connects the operator arm to the gate leaf. On Linear slide gates, the equivalent weak points are the rear chain idler bracket and the front drive sprocket mount. The fabrication we do applies across the Linear residential line: LRA, LRA-D, APeX-5, APeX-7, and the LS series slide operators. The trick is identifying what’s on your gate, because Linear’s model numbers are on a sticker that Texas sun often bleaches to nothing within three or four years.

Here’s what we check when the label is gone: motor housing dimensions, arm style (straight versus articulating), and the bolt pattern on the original bracket. Linear used a different hole spacing on the APeX series than on most of the LRA line, and that half-inch difference is why a generic aftermarket bracket often doesn’t line up. Sometimes an aftermarket bracket is fine, sometimes we’d rather cut and drill a new one from plate steel on site. The decision comes down to whether the aftermarket piece matches the original geometry closely enough to avoid changing the gate’s travel arc. If it doesn’t, we fabricate.

• Gate sags lower on the latch side by half an inch or more. The hinge welds or the hinge plates themselves are fatiguing. Linear gates are heavy, and the hinge point takes all of that weight every single cycle. What starts as a hairline crack at the weld becomes a visible sag within a season.
• The operator arm makes a clunking sound at the end of travel. The connecting bracket has worn its bolt holes oval, or the weld attaching the bracket to the gate frame has cracked. The arm is now hammering against slop instead of moving the gate cleanly.
• You can see rust weeping from a joint or bracket. That rust line means the weld or the steel next to it has already started to separate. In Conroe humidity, a cracked weld rusts quickly, and the stain is usually the first visible sign owners notice.
